Running a proper QR code A/B test requires:

  2. Define your success metric in advance. Is it total scan count? Unique scans? Conversion rate from scan to website action? Know what you're measuring before you start.
  3. Ensure equivalent exposure. Both variants must be deployed in environments that are as similar as possible — same footfall, same demographic, same duration. If variant A goes up in a busy shopping street and variant B goes up in a quiet side street, you're not testing the variable you think you are.

With small sample sizes, random variation can make one variant appear better when it isn't. Before declaring a winner, check whether the difference between variants is statistically meaningful.

As a rough rule of thumb:

  • If variant A has 200 scans and variant B has 210 scans, the difference is likely noise
  • If variant A has 200 scans and variant B has 380 scans, the difference is meaningful and actionable

For more rigorous testing, use a statistical significance calculator (many are free online) with your scan counts and desired confidence level (typically 95%).

Look Beyond Raw Scan Count

A higher scan count isn't always better. If variant A generates 300 scans with a 3% conversion rate (9 conversions) and variant B generates 200 scans with an 8% conversion rate (16 conversions), variant B is the winner — despite fewer scans.

Always connect scan data with destination page conversion data when the ultimate goal is a specific user action (purchase, booking, sign-up). Scan count is a leading indicator; conversion is the outcome that matters.

Segment by Device and Geography

A/B test results can look different when segmented. An overall winning variant might actually be underperforming for iOS users while overperforming for Android users. Geographic segmentation might reveal that variant A wins in London but variant B wins in Manchester.
