Editable QR Codes
Change where a QR code points after it has been printed. Same code on the wall, new destination, no reprint.
How an editable QR code works
An editable code — the technical name is a dynamic QR code — does not contain your destination. It contains a short redirect link that you control. When someone scans it, they hit that redirect and are forwarded to wherever you are currently pointing it.
Because the pattern encodes the redirect and not the destination, the printed code never needs to change. You can repoint it as often as you like and every copy already in circulation follows along within seconds.
When this saves you a reprint
- Your website moves or restructures. New booking system, new domain, new page URLs — the printed code keeps working.
- A campaign ends. Point last season's poster at this season's offer instead of a dead page.
- You printed a typo. The single most expensive mistake in print, reduced to a thirty-second fix.
- Packaging outlives the page. A code on 50,000 units will outlast at least one site rebuild.
- You want to test. Send the same printed code to two different landing pages in turn and compare which performs.
Editable vs static, side by side
| Static QR code | Editable (dynamic) QR code | |
|---|---|---|
| Change destination after printing | No — ever | Yes, anytime |
| See how many people scanned | No | Yes |
| Location, device and timing data | No | Yes |
| Works if the company disappears | Yes, forever | Needs the redirect to stay live |
| Cost | Free | £1.99/month per code |
Both have their place. If the destination will genuinely never change and you do not need scan data — a wifi password, a link on a business card — a free static code is the right tool.
Can I edit a code I have already printed?
Only if it was dynamic when you created it. This is the part people discover too late. If your printed code is static, the destination is inside the pattern and no platform can change it — not the one that made it, not us.
If you control the page the code points at, you can sometimes rescue it by putting a redirect on that page. That buys you a working code but no scan data, and it only works while you keep that URL alive. Otherwise the answer is a reprint — which is exactly the cost an editable code exists to avoid. See why QR codes stop working for the other common causes.
